On May 18, 1974, India exploded an underground plutonium device with a yield of 10-15 kilotons. India stated that this device was developed entirely for peaceful purposes. It is now estimated that India has some 50 nuclear devices. In May 1998, India shocked the world by resuming testing. India has not signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
